Clinical identifiers of complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.
BACKGROUND Complications of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) are often difficult to identify. The ability to accurately predict the likelihood of these complications would impact patient management. This investigation sought to define readily available clinical characteristics that could help identify patients at risk for complicated SAB. METHODS A prospective, observational cohort stud...
متن کاملHigh Vancomycin MIC and Complicated Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia
We conducted a retrospective study of 99 patients with methicillin-suseptible Staphylococcus aureus catheter-related bacteremia in which vancomycin MIC was determined by Etest. High vancomycin MIC (>1.5 ug/mL) was the only independent risk factor for development of complicated bacteremia caused by methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (odds ratio 22.9, 95% confidence interval 6.7-78.1).
متن کاملPasteurella multocida pneumonia complicated by Staphylococcus aureus.
A 71-year-old woman presented with acute non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. She proved to have a Pasteurella multocida pneumonia, with blood stream invasion by the organism, and required positive pressure ventilation for 53 days. Penicillin G., the drug of choice for this infection, failed to reverse the steady decline in her arterial oxygen-tension, and it was only after treatment with chloramp...
متن کاملStaphylococcus aureus endocarditis complicated by bilateral pneumothorax.
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of endocarditis in intravenous drug users. The organism gains access by intravenous injection or from the direct invasion of skin at injection sites. Known for its aggressiveness, the right sided endocarditis that ensues can lead to complications such as pulmonary abscesses and even death. We report the unusual case of an intravenous drug abuser, w...
متن کاملStaphylococcus aureus Bacteremia Complicated by Psoas Abscess and Infective Endocarditis in a Patient with Atopic Dermatitis
The close relationship between atopic dermatitis (AD) and infective endocarditis (IE) has been implicated. Staphylococcus aureus colonization is frequently seen observed in AD patients' skin lesions. Although a case of IE due to S. aureus bacteremia in an AD patient has been sporadically reported, a case of S. aureus bacteremia complicated by psoas abscess and IE has not been previously reporte...
